Our organization

The Community of Democracies (CoD) is an international organization that drives the global democracy agenda through common action. Since its establishment in 2000, the Community has brought together governments, civil society and the private sector in the pursuit of a common goal: supporting democratic rules and strengthening democratic norms and institutions around the world.

Born as a common initiative of former U.S. Secretary of State Madeleine Albright and Polish Foreign Minister Bronisław Geremek, the organization was launched in a special Ministerial Conference held in Poland, where high-level delegations from 106 countries signed the Warsaw Declaration Toward a Community of Democracies.

Signatories pledged to uphold the democratic values expressed in the Warsaw Declaration and to support them through a variety of initiatives. Those commitments have been reinforced at the Ministerial Conferences the Community holds every two years, and through the ongoing work of democratic governments in support of democracy and human rights around the world.
