Geremek Award for Mandela
Portugal awarded for the first time ever the “Geremek Prize for Outstanding Achievement in Democracy Promotion”.
The award, which is given for particularly relevant achievements in the development of democracy and implementation of the rule of law, went to Mr. Nelson Mandela at a ceremony during the Fifth Ministerial Conference of the Community of Democracies on July 12 2009. The winner is chosen among individual persons, associations, or organizations. The Prize is named after a legendary leader of the Polish “Solidarity” movement, Prof. Bronislaw Geremek, who died tragically in a car accident in Poland last year, heading for a session at the European Parliament.
