Visit of Michael Posner at the Permanent Secretariat of the Community of Democracies - 9 October 2009
Mr. Michael Posner, US Assistant Secretary for Democracy, Human Rights, and Labour, paid an official visit to Poland during his first trip to Europe. One of his official program elements was a visit at the Permanent Secretariat of the Community of Democracies where plans of the US State Department regarding global democratic agenda were presented. The meeting gathered representatives from the world of Polish academia, diplomacy, business, think tanks and media who were able to express their opinions concerning the role of Poland in defining global democratization agenda.
In the course of the discussion, the participants paid attention to such issues as Poland’s experiences and lessons learnt during democratic transition and the role in defining of democracy building agenda, concept of democracy and its values as well as the relevance of the Community of Democracies in promotion of democracy and human rights in the 21st century. Mr. Posner underlined the necessity for revitalizing of the Community and need for partnership with the European Union and other international organizations in order to deliver professional support and assistance to the countries facing challenges when it comes to the democratization process.
Mr. Posner expressed his strong interest and will to support the Community of Democracies. He confirmed that the US Administration is currently preparing a strategy on democracy and human rights.
