Informal Ministerial Meeting of the Community of Democracies - 24 September 2009, New York (United Nations General Assembly)

On Thursday, 24 September 2009 in New York City, an Informal Ministerial Meeting of the Community of Democracies was organized by the Permanent Mission of Lithuania during the United Nations General Assembly. At the meeting, the foreign ministers of Community of Democracies and representatives of the participating states discussed such issues as presentation of priorities of Lithuanian Presidency including improving efficiency and relevance of the Community worldwide as well as creating synergies between the Community and other stakeholders of democracy building. Additionally, the Community of Democracies made a Statement on the situation in Honduras calling for the restoration of democratic order, human rights and fundamental freedoms.
The representatives from the Community of Democracies also agreed with Lithuania’s suggestion to restore the working groups who will among other issues discuss threats to democracy, strengthening democratic governance in relation to the global economic and financial crisis, role of women and youth in the development of democracy, education on democracy, regional cooperation, protection of civil society and non-governmental organizations from the non-democratic governments.
The Ministers supported Lithuanian proposition for the UN General Assembly‘s resolution on education regarding democracy issues and a suggestion to strengthen the activities of the Community of Democracies within the UN in New York and the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva.
